but first, tonight, headlines the first lady michelle obama. >> well, today, after so many struggles and triumphs and moms that have tested my husband in ways i never could have imagined, i have seen firsthand, that being president doesn't change who you are. no. it reveals who you are. you see, i have gotten to see up close and personal what being president really looks like. i've seen how issue that's come across the president's desk are always hard ones. you know problems where no amount of data or numbers will get you to the right answer. judgment call stakes are high and there is no margin for error. you're going to get all kinds of advise from all kinds of people but at the end of the day when it comes time to make that decision aas president all have you to guide you are your values and your vision and the life exkbreerns that's make you who you are. barack knows american dream because he has lived it. and he wants everyone in this country everyone, to have the same opportunity no matter who we are or where we're from, what we look like, or who we love. and... he believes that

with it tonight, at the moment, michelle obama is there with her mother in the front row. that's the best seat in the house. the worst seat in the house is section 201. you could not get any further from the stage, top row, 201. at 4:00 today, section 201 was filled, five hours ago. that's how long the delegates and supporters have been waiting for these big speeches tonight. we are reaching a boiling point. remember, this was expected to be an outdoor event. so the delegates inside had tickets on tuesday night and wednesday night. that's how they gained access to the proceedings tonight. as for the other 40,000 tickets, they are simply out of luck after the venue was cancelled. one reminder, 2008, stage right, there is a barack obama picture, it looks like the campaign of 2008 with the four-letter word hope beneath it. it may be a reminder of paul ryan's sharp comment in tampa just a week ago. by the way, the weather was the big reason they said it was moved inside. tonight in charlotte, it is partly cloudy. 78 degrees. and no rain in sight. bret and megyn, back to you. >> let's bring the pan

, first lady michelle obama here this afternoon during "studio b" checking out the stage. former president bill clinton set to peek wednesday night and then thursday, the whole thing moves to bank of america stadium for president obama's acceptance speech. ed state yum does not have a dome. pretty good chance of thunderstorms. mike emanuel is here in charlotte. pretty good reason to worry about the weather based on the deluge we had this afternoon. >> that's right, shep. we have had really big thunderstorms in recent days, including a doosie today at an outdoor festival for delegates and for the public. weather clearly was a factor. in fact, north carolina's own james taylor, the headliner at an event this afternoon was playing and trying to get through the driving rain, did his very best to try to power through and instruments. in driving rain with thunder and lightning the plug was eventually pulled on his show. obviously it would be a much bigger deal if such a weather factor happened during the president's speech, shep. >> shepard: sure it would. he has seen fire and rain and sunny day

had a great speech and the night before, michelle obama. if you were listening what i call a fact challenged listener, switching between honey boo-boo and barack obama gee, that was a great speech. it was like a helium balloon. it was filled with a lot of lighter than reality air that made you float but there wasn't anything in the balloon. he was giving a whole litany of things he was going to do, if you couldn't do it now, why couldn't you do it on last four years. it was empty. people on the left were critiquing it that way. heather: not a lot of facts to back up a lot of language to talk about moving forward. >> to reach out and say i will create a million manufacturing jobs? really? go ahead. pull a rabbit out of your head. make mosquitoes where they don't bite. make it where a woman with a size 11-foot gets to wear a size five shoe. let's go ahead and do all the great things. but that is the problem with the speech last night. he didn't say, here's where we are, here's how we got there but here's how we're going to fix it and by the way i didn't do this way before because i

-election. michelle obama did as bill clinton and former michigan governor, jennifer granholm. this president is using socialist euphemisms, fair share, fair shot, dividing america, not using hope and change rhetoric he was so powerful for using four years before and able to get elected by such a wide march begin then. this is frustrating true believers the dowds of the left really are. whatever they may have felt four years ago they have been backing this president up every turn. >> she was never a true wleefr. martha: let me interject here. in the ericson piece written by one of his reporters at red state he talks about whether or not the president is relevant. goes to issues showing up in this maureen dowd piece which is whether or not he was one making the change that he was seeking. and when you look at bob woodward's book it gives a couple of examples that time nancy pelosi was talking to him about the budget. according to woodward's reporting she put the president on mute so that the people in the room could continue their conversation while he was espousing something. she says that is not true

unifier at the republican convention was barack obama. i mean that is just the way it is. bill: todd, if you go back to pampa, i saw gingrich on stage, i saw santorum on stage. i saw michele bachmann and herman cain. >> yeah. this was, if anything, tampa was a celebration of republican unity but joe is right that for every convention when you have a challenger who has gone through a primary you do have to go through this process. let's not forget in 2008 at the democratic convention 40% of democrats still wanted hillary clinton to be their nominee. >> that's right. >> that was significant division. and obviously it didn't really hurt barack obama all that much. bill: to both of you in the 30 seconds left, todd, does this make a difference and how much of a difference united versus divided or division or unity however you want to define it, how does that play out in '64 days? >> it would make a significant difference if it were true but it is not true. the fact is republicans are overwhelmingly united behind mitt romney. democrats are overwhelmingly united behind barack obama. bill: j
